Approach & Values

Lead with trust. Protect the craft.

I’m a hands-on leader. I believe the best creative work happens when people feel trusted, supported, and safe enough to contribute their best ideas. My favorite moments aren’t winning awards. They’re watching someone on my team grow in confidence, solve a difficult problem, and receive the recognition they’ve earned.

    Principles

What I believe about creative work.

    Designers aren’t order takers.

They’re subject-matter experts. I want them in the room for the thinking, and credited when the work wins.

Coach people toward what they want to become.

I coached a designer who wanted to move into video but doubted themselves, working through creative blocks with them until they led the work with confidence.

    Teach the process.

I spend time teaching other departments what the creative process really takes, because good work needs time, and people respect time they understand.

AI stays around the work, not in it.

I use ChatGPT, Claude, and Adobe Firefly before and after the design for research, ideas, and the work around the work. Taste, judgment, and empathy stay human.

    The Foundation

    Start with the behavior.

Behavioral economics is the foundation of my marketing. Every campaign begins with one question: what behavior are we trying to change? From customer loyalty and product adoption to workforce engagement and nonprofit growth, creative is the vehicle, and craft is what makes it land.

    The Craft

Build the system, then the story.

Most of the programs in my portfolio are sub-brands built inside bigger brands. For each one I built the logo, the design system, the brand guide, and the templates the team used to produce the work day to day. I love finding the gaps in communication, customer experience, or process, and bringing people together to solve them.

Why the work matters to me.

I founded Ahlstedt Design in 2008 to support organizations making a difference in their communities. One project will always be meaningful: redesigning the identity for the Weymouth Food Pantry, the same food pantry my family relied on growing up.

It still shapes the work I want to do, building brands that solve meaningful problems and help organizations create lasting impact.

Great brand work isn’t about getting people’s attention.

    It’s about earning their trust.
